The Toyota Hilux has long been one of the most trusted and best-selling bakkies (pickup trucks) across the world — from the rugged Australian outback to South African farms and construction sites. Now, Toyota is back with the next-generation 2025 Toyota Hilux, and while it brings a sharper design and new tech, many fans are wondering: has it really changed enough?
Let’s take a closer look at what’s new, what’s carried over, and what you can expect when it officially hits the market.
🔹 Bold New Exterior — Designed in Australia
Toyota’s Australian design team led the styling of the new Hilux, ensuring it matches the tough, outdoor spirit that Australians and South Africans love.
The front fascia is bolder and more upright, featuring the Toyota lettering across the grille, a 360-degree camera, and radar technology for modern safety assists. The Rogue trim — the top-spec version shown — sits 100 mm higher than before, partly for better pedestrian safety.
Interestingly, Toyota has dropped the “Low Rider” models, meaning all versions now sit higher, giving the Hilux a more commanding presence on and off-road.
🔹 Familiar Platform, Updated Look
While the new Hilux looks tougher, it’s still based on the carry-over platform from the previous generation.
That means the engine, chassis rails, wheelbase, and dimensions remain largely the same. Toyota claims this is because customers are happy with the current size — unlike competitors who’ve grown larger inside.
The most obvious design updates are at the front and rear, while the center body section remains familiar. The rear also now includes a handy step for easier access to the load bed — a small but useful upgrade inspired by the Ford Ranger.
🔹 Powertrain: Proven 2.8L Diesel Lives On
Under the bonnet, Toyota continues with its reliable 2.8-litre 4-cylinder turbo diesel engine, delivering 150 kW and 500 Nm of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic.
There’s also a new 48V mild-hybrid system on higher trims, which helps with smoother restarts and slightly better fuel economy. However, there’s no full-time 4WD system — you still get selectable 2H, 4H, and 4L modes with a rear diff lock that only works in low range.
🔹 Suspension and Ride Comfort
Toyota engineers have re-tuned the suspension for a better balance between payload capability and comfort.
Lower trims get a “work-tuned” setup for carrying loads, while higher trims like the Rogue get a comfort-tuned suspension, designed to fix the Hilux’s long-standing issue — that it rides best only when loaded.
🔹 Interior: A Big Step Forward
Step inside, and this is where the 2025 Hilux really feels new.
The cabin now features a 12.3-inch infotainment display, a fully digital driver’s display, and higher-quality materials all around.
Toyota has kept physical buttons for key controls (unlike Ford’s touch-only setup), making it easier to use while driving.
You’ll also find a heated steering wheel, heated and ventilated seats, and wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto — though the wireless charger below could use better cooling.
Storage is thoughtful, with air-conditioned compartments, cup holders in front of air vents, and an overall smarter layout.
The only downside? The rear seats still feel cramped, since Toyota hasn’t increased the wheelbase.
🔹 Rear Tray & Utility
At the back, the tray still features partial LED tail lights, a center-aligned reverse camera, and a 3.5-ton towing capacity.
Hydraulic tailgate assist is only available on higher trims (or as an accessory), while lower trims still require some muscle to open and close the tailgate.
Interestingly, Toyota keeps carpet lining in the Rogue’s load bed — something owners have mixed feelings about, but many find useful for preventing scratches.
🔹 Verdict: A Refresh or a Revolution?
After over a decade of the current generation, fans expected Toyota to bring something completely new.
While the 2025 Hilux is undeniably sharper, more comfortable, and packed with better tech, it feels more like a major facelift than an all-new model.
The carryover engine, similar dimensions, and familiar driving setup might disappoint some buyers who expected hybrid or V6 options.
However, Toyota’s reputation for reliability, resale value, and toughness remains unmatched — and that alone may keep Hilux at the top of the sales charts.
🔹 Final Thoughts — From TopNiceCars
At TopNiceCars, we think the new Hilux still delivers where it matters most — durability, simplicity, and everyday practicality.
But with rivals like the Ford Ranger, Isuzu D-Max, and even Chinese brands offering more innovation, Toyota might need to move faster toward hybrid tech and more interior space.
If you’re considering a new bakkie, keep an eye on pricing when it launches in December 2025.
