Hey guys, get ready to meet the GWM Tank 300. It’s a cool SUV that totally channels old-school G-Wagon vibes. Think high-ground clearance and a rugged, go-anywhere attitude. I got a chance to check it out at a dealership, and I’ve got to say, it’s packed with features and seriously capable!
Models!
Let’s start with the basics. The Tank 300 we saw was bright orange, but they have other colors too. It comes in three models:
- Super Luxury
- Ultra Luxury
- Hybrid Auto Super Luxury
Right now, they don’t offer a diesel engine option. All models have a 2-liter turbocharged petrol engine. But, the Hybrid Auto Super Luxury I looked at is extra special because it combines the gas engine with hybrid technology. This combo gives it an impressive 255 kilowatts of power and 648 Newton-meters of torque!
As for fuel efficiency, the company claims around 8.4 liters per 100 kilometers. I’d have to drive it for a while to see how accurate that is in the real world.

Of course, this ride is a real beast off-road. It’s got four-wheel drive, and I gotta find a place to properly test this thing out! But even if you’re mostly driving in the city. No parking spot is off-limits with the Tank! One can park on top of pavements.

- The Boot: The trunk is spacious – 400 liters! It also has a subwoofer, a 220-volt power supply, and a 12-volt socket.
- Spare Tire: It’s got a full-size spare mounted right on the back door, which is important for off-roading.

- Backseat Chill Zone: There’s tons of legroom in the back, plus a center armrest with cupholders, rear air vents, and two USB ports. Plenty of headroom, too!
- Fancy Interior: For the few minutes I drove it, I was impressed. Everything feels solid. The 12.3-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is awesome, there’s a wireless charger, and a proper, chunky gear lever. The seats are comfy, and the overall feel is way more expensive than it actually is.

The GWM Tank 300 HEV starts at R851,950. Here’s a quick breakdown of how that might look:
- Monthly Payment: On a 6-year finance plan with 12% interest, you’re looking at roughly R16,652 per month.
- Fuel: The exact fuel tank capacity isn’t out yet, but let’s say a full tank costs around R1,500.
- Insurance: A rough estimate for insurance might be around R3,000 per month.
All together, this puts your estimated total monthly cost of ownership around R21,152.
Service, Warranty, and That Sweet Hybrid Peace of Mind
